Horse and Rider #554

Prints: The original painting has been sold. This piece is available in a limited-edition giclee print on archival matte paper. Unframed. Framing is available.

The original ink and acrylic on antique ledger paper, signed Merle Locke OLA and dated 2015, is a beautiful and charming example of traditional Native American ledger art. Approximately 14.5"x6".

Locke uses ledger paper #554 dated March 26, 1899 from a Black Hills grocery store as a reminder of that terrible time in Native American history. Native artists have continued to use ledger paper when nothing else was available for their art, making it a tradition. Locke's art honors the memories of his ancestors in part out of necessity, as art supplies still do not come easily on the Reservation.

In this example from his iconic Horse and Rider series, Locke depicts a beautifully dressed rider with full headdress and a masterfully executed white horse.
