~ Unity thru Wisdom ~
This ink and acrylic on antique ledger paper, signed Merle Locke OLA and dated 2015, is a beautiful and charming example of traditional Native American ledger art. Approximately 14.5"x6".
Prints: The original piece has been sold. This painting is available in a limited-edition, giclee print on archival fine art paper. Select Print above. Unframed. Framing is available.
Locke uses ledger paper #221 dated November 8, 1898 from a Black Hills grocery store in Oelrichs or Keystone, SD as a reminder of that terrible time in Native American history. Native artists have continued to use ledger paper for their art, making it part of the tradition.
Beautiful detailing of her belt, braid, traditional Lakota dress and parfleche bag highlight this piece. A symbol of strength, she stands firmly with Mother Earth and looks toward the buffalo as an eagle flies at her back.
Merle is one of the most recognized Oglala Lakota artists working today! Watch a video of Merle discussing his art.
